WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

This oil painting workshop will explore the particular technique of Carlos San Millán, focusing on how to achieve unity and coherence in tones and lights from the beginning through previous underpainting work, chromatic nuances, and light treatment, including those unexpected marks that we will use as wonderful tools in our work. Carlos will demonstrate his approach to creating dynamic paintings using everyday interior scenes as inspiration. Students will learn how to use underpainting related to light and color and how to create harmony of light and shapes from the start for a strong finish. The workshop will include discussion on drawing, color, value, and what to do when a painting isn’t working.

BIO

“I was born in Spain in 1969 and after living some years in Quito, Ecuador with my family, we are now back in Madrid. My paintings have a big autobiographical component: My subjects belong many times to my immediate environment, to my nearest reality,  largely due to my belief that it is not necessary to go too far to find the universal in everyday things. I would define my work as a continuous searching that becomes frustrating sometimes; I’m a little obsessed with reaching some way to represent things and matter satisfactorily and definitively.”

EDUCATION
School of Fine Arts, University of the Basque Country. Bilbao, Spain.

DEMO

All interested in buying Carlos’ demo (if finished and for sale) will enter a drawing after the price for the demo is set. Last workshop day, a name will be randomly picked, and this person will be able to buy the demo. Good Luck!

SUPPLIES LIST

Supports:
I always work on rigid supports, so I would recommend cotton fine-grane
canvas panels or primed wood painting panels, about 18” x 24”.
Students could also work on traditional canvas but from my point of view this support presents some limitations when working with large palette-knifes.

2 panels, about 18” x 24”,  per student would be fine. You can bring more if you want. We’re going to work alternating on both panels to let the surface get dry and ready for the following session.

Please bring all the panels on day one.

PAINT
Specific for DEMOS:
These are the colors I’ll be using during the workshop. You can bring these or your preferred palette. What’s mandatory is to bring acrylics, alkyd oils* or a fast drying medium for the first layers of your paintings, and then switch to oils to finish them. You can keep working with acrylics till the end if you prefer working with acrylics.

*Alkyd oils: http://www.winsornewton.com/row/discover/resources/colour-charts/griffin-fast-drying-oil-colour

IMPORTANT: Please notice that I work exclusively with oils but due to the nature of this workshop and time limitations, I’m going to start painting my demos with acrylics, or alkyd fast drying colors (Griffin type) to get a dry surface in a reasonable time, and using oils for the last stages.
